The Impact of 9-11 and the Economy on College Choice
and Study Abroad

Did 9-11 affect students' interest in studying abroad?

No. Ninety-five percent of students reported that the events of 9-11 had no effect on their plans to participate in a study abroad program.

To further examine the possible impact of 9-11 on interest in study abroad, we compared the results of our current study with one we conducted two years ago in collaboration with the American Council on Education.

In our current study, 38 percent of respondents indicated that they planned to participate in study abroad while in college.

Two years ago, 48 percent of those we surveyed expressed an intention to participate in study abroad, 10 percent more than in our latest survey. Five percent of this variance is explained by the proportion of students in the current study who indicated that 9-11 discouraged their participation in study abroad. The balance of the difference can be accounted for by the margin of error in the data.
